Oh gosh, there are a lot of synonyms for “move along on foot.” You don’t even know where to begin. Your first instinct was to go with something that meant “walk” but you now realize that the word could also be a variant on “run,” “march,” “hop,” “jump,” or any other foot-related movement.

It’s entirely possible that the North American Crossword Syndicate is trying to mess with you. After all, This particular crossword carries a difficulty level of “don’t try this without safety goggles and parental supervision.”

It could be a deep, scientific clue relating to pseudopods (Latin for “false feet”) which are used by one-celled organisms to move around their crazy little cellular worlds.  The entire notion of pseudopodia is actually quite fascinating, and you spend a fair amount of time researching it before you get back to the matter at hand.

It could be a foreign word like “andé,” “trät” or “도전세계.”

Maybe you’re overthinking it. “Move Along on Foot” could be a cultural reference of some sort. It sounds vaguely like the title of a Johnny Cash song or a Clint Eastwood movie. Too bad you were raised in an underground Mormon colony for the first sixteen years of your life and were never exposed to bad-ass stuff like that.

You’re struck with an epiphany. Perhaps you’ve been looking at the phrase all wrong this whole time. Perhaps instead of moving along on foot, it’s about moving along on a foot, that is, moving yourself across someone else’s foot. Could “tread” be the answer you’re looking for? You begin to fill it into the puzzle, but no, damn it. That’s five letters.

You hear the familiar melodic line of “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira; it’s your ringtone. It’s getting old, but you paid $2.99 for it and you’re determined to make maximum use of it…
